"She put down the phone and wept for Ronnie.
She wept, remembering the times she complained about the possibility of someone like Ronnie breaking into her garage. Had James in his own twisted way taken her complaints as a license for him to murder that boy?
Did Mary weep when she heard about the children who were murdered because of her Son? Did she wail at God like their mamas probably did, wondering why He didn't help those innocent children?
Why God? Why didn't You help that boy?
And in her heart, she heard a whisper, Lela, why didn't you?"
-from the book, The Memory Quilt
Time and again, the fiction of T.D. Jakes has proven to be as inspiring and enlightening as his motivational and spiritual guides, and his latest foray, The Memory Quilt: A Christmas Story for Our Times, is no exception.
With his trademark candor and powerful storytelling skills, Bishop Jakes weaves 10 lessons of the virgin birth into a collection of stories sewn together by the creation of one grandmother’s quilt. Each time she embarks upon a new section of her quilt, she turns to her bible for inspiration to create that particular segment. As the story unfolds, we learn the grandmother has led a rich existence, but now feels much pain at the solitude in her life. And as her heart aches for what she once had, she finds spiritual relief in the bible stories, as stories about what really matters to her begin to materialize out of the fabric of these tales and into her quilt. Once finished, she decides to share both her completed quilt and her renewed sense of joy with children in a shelter, leaving the quilt to keep them both physically and spiritually warm. Just like an heirloom quilt, this story is a beautiful patchwork of message and meaning sure to be cherished for generations to come.
