"And last but not least, of the good things I desire for this
daughter-o'-mine, are peace, a love of nature and time for quiet, happy
thoughts. Can they be had by any other class of working people as easily as
by the woman on the farm? She doesn't rush to finish her work that she may
spend a day bargain-hunting-a day of hurry, worry and "me first" thoughts;
of spending money she shouldn't spend and gazing at things she wants and
can't have. No; she may sit on the front porch a wee bit while she sews or
mends or perhaps reads...S he will see and feel and hear the beauty of the
world-her world-and with an unruffled spirit she will go in and get supper
for her hungry brood.
"And so, folks, I want my daughter to marry a farmer, a good man, upright,
steadfast and true, with visions of the farm-life-to-be in his heart. Then,
hand and hand, they can work to make their dreams come true, and she will
know the happinesss I have known. I could not ask for more."
-Mrs. S.O., Mille Lacs County, Minn.
From The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt by Laurie Aaron Hird
In 1922, Farmer’s Wife magazine held a contest where they asked their readers "Do You Want Your Daughter To Marry a Farmer?" The response was overwhelming—and overwhelmingly positive. Now, the Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt brings together a sampling of these heartwarming letters from all over the United States. With titles like “Well Balanced and Happily Busy,” “I Lost My Heart to a Farmer” and “A Vote for the Country” they’re so much fun to read, but the neatest thing about Laurie Aaron Hird’s book is that it includes patterns for 111 traditional-style 6" quilt blocks inspired by the stories, that can be combined to create king, twin and crib size quilts. The bonus CD-ROM allows for easy printing and multiple uses of the templates.

Whether you love to quilt (like I do) or you just want to read some heart warming stories and view some beautiful quilts, this is the book for you!
I loved reading the contest responses in the book, very heartwarming!
And soon I will be starting a BOM using this book. I do agree that without patterns and just the templates it will be a challenge but with a little help from my favorite shop owner it'll be a cinch!
I have already recommended this book to several friends!
And to those reading this, I say buy it, it's a great book!

Maybe it is because I love history, but, I loved the "Farmers Wife Sampler Quilt". It reminded me of days gone by when people actually loved their simple lives. Lives that were not complicated by materialism. Almost every letter talked about their connection to the earth. Today, we do not the simple things, such as, the sun, wind, rain, smells.
Also, the quilt blocks were beautiful and inspired me to make a sampler quilt. Any book that inspires me is worth my time and money.

After receiving 3 books with broken cd's inside, the publisher sent me a whole cd. I have to agree the templates do waste paper - and piecing instructions are not available. I would recommend this for an experienced quilter who would automatically know what needs to be done. The stories and the quilt blocks were very good, Laurie Aaron Hird did a lovely job with the quilt and I give her 5 stars for hand piecing, something my arthritis prevents these days. The publisher did a fantastic job with the book, and has changed the method of delivery for the cd, so it should arrive in mailboxes in one piece. My experience may be rather unusual, so I would say go for it, the newer books may not have problems like I experienced.

I always bought my Mom quilt books from Crafters Choice through the years because they always have some really good books; however, this book was exception, it was excellent. I sent this book to my Mom a week before she passed; she told me that this was the best quilt book she had ever viewed. Mom was 86 years and quilted her whole life.
