Like Martin Luther King and John F. Kennedy, President Barack Obama has inspired millions of people around the world with his powerful message of change. Now you can inspire your child with this beautiful portrayal of the life and career of the “skinny man with the funny name” who is our nation’s first African-American president!
Even when President Obama was just a kid, he knew that he wanted to help people to improve their lives. Award-winning author Nikki Grimes and Caldecott-winning illustrator Bryan Collier take us from Obama’s childhood, when everyone he knew called him Barry, all the way to the not so distant past where he challenged us all to work together as one to make America better. This President did not do anything for us yet, and yet he has a book about him. I have seen it in stores and looked at it. I don't think it could instill values to my child. I come from socialist Russia, and we had these kind of books about Lenin and Brezhnev... They give me a bad taste, and I want to protect my child from worshipping someone who is still (excuse me!) a blank. Such tributes have to be deserved.

An interesting read to get some background on our new President. The sub-plot of the young boy and his mother was a bit much, but I do understand it's purpose. Our entire family read the book and enjoyed it. As an elementary teacher, I will have it in my room for other children to read.
