Three Rings for the Elven-Kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne, In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them, In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
Few English-speaking people born and raised in the latter half of the 20th century have never heard of The Lord of the Rings. Originally published from 1954 through 1956, J.R.R. Tolkien's richly complex 3-volume series ushered in a new age of epic adventure storytelling. Today, it is considered "the most influential fantasy novel ever written."--(The Encyclopedia of Fantasy)
Of course, tales of the fantastic had been told before, sagas spun of myth and legend, dream and hallucination. But no mere modern invention had ever succeeded on such a grand scale. A philologist and illustrator who took inspiration from his work, Tolkien invented the modern heroic quest novel from the ground up, creating not just a world but a domain, not just a lexicon but a language, that would spawn countless imitators and lead to the inception of the epic fantasy genre.
Now, at last, the SFBC is pleased to present our very own hardcover omnibus edition of this fantasy classic, complete with indexes, appendices and maps.
During his travels across Middle-earth, the hobbit Bilbo Baggins had found the Ring. But the simple band of gold was far from ordinary; it was, in fact, the One Ring--the greatest of the ancient Rings of Power. Sauron, the Dark Lord, had infused it with his own evil magic, and when it was lost, he was forced to flee into hiding.
But now Sauron's exile has ended and his power is spreading anew, fueled by the knowledge that his treasure has been found. He has gathered all the Great Rings to him, and will stop at nothing to reclaim the One that will complete his dominion. The only way to stop him is to cast the Ruling Ring deep into the Fire-Mountain at the heart of the land of Mordor--Sauron's dark realm.
Fate has placed the burden in the hands of Frodo Baggins, Bilbo's heir...and he is resolved to bear it to its end. Or his own. Includes The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the Kings. Includes 8 pp. of maps. Jacket art by Donato. (1,163 pp.)

Amazing! Without a doubt the greatest book I have ever read. When I read this book I felt like I was there and knew the characters. I was actually sad when I finished it. I thought the movies were great but after reading the books the movies are average. Everyone should read these books.

I agree with all the other reviewers, Tolkien set the standard so long ago, and writers today are still trying to match his skill. They always fall short. This is always a good choice for a serious reader.

I am glad that they have the LOTR's in one book cuase that was how its originally meant to be. I have three copies of the LOTR's and when I was reading it for the first time a couple month ago a read the ROTK out of this verision. And with all three books in one if you forgot something(or you have to bring a piece of poetry to read in class and you forgot) this book can be really useful.Kate C.

I had promised myself that I would read this book when I was in my early 20's (30+ years ago), but it was such a BIG book I never got around to it. Not until the movie came out did I remember my promise. This is, without a doubt, the most AMAZING book I've ever read, even after seeing the movie first. I feel like I'm there with the characters, along for the adventure. The maps and the appendices really help you feel like you are a part of the story because you can follow their path and understand everything. With so much detail, it must have taken Tolkien his entire life to write this novel. A must read!

I love this wondeful book. Tolkien takes you into a world that is seems so distant. He makes you feel it is real. The detail, the many characters, the languages, the magnitude of it all. Amazing!!!
