Franklin Pierce

Franklin Pierce of New Hampshire was drafted to break the deadlock of the 1852 Democratic convention. Though he seized the White House from the imploding Whig Party, his presidency was a dismal failure.

Historian Michael F. Holt argues that, in the wake of the Whig collapse, Pierce was consumed by a drive to unify his party rather than the roiling country. He supported repeal of the Missouri Compromise, which led to the violence of “Bleeding Kansas” and the formation of the Republican Party. By the end of his term, Pierce’s party had ruptured, and he lost the nomination to James Buchanan.

Franklin Pierce shows how a flawed leader, so dedicated to his party yet ill-suited for the presidency, hastened the approach of the Civil War.

Not sure...
March 26, 2012

Not sure what to make of this book. Clearly the author likes Pierce, so objectivity may be questionable. The author does state that Pierce often ranks as one of the 8 worst presidents but never really explains way. The reader is left to conclude the Kansas-Nebraska Act was Pierce's chief undoing and the reason his reputation was ruined. I have to believe there is more to it than that one act of Congress. However, I did learn a lot that I did not know, e.g. Pierce was a Brig. General in the Mexican-American War. Overall I think the book is worth reading and therefore recommend it.
