Andrew Johnson faced a nearly impossible task—to succeed Abraham Lincoln, to bind the nation’s wounds after the Civil War and to work with a Congress controlled by the so-called Radical Republicans. Annette Gordon-Reed shows how ill-suited Johnson was for this effort. The climax of Johnson’s presidency was his trial in the Senate and his acquittal by a single vote, which Gordon-Reed recounts with drama and palpable tension. An Op-ed not a work of history.

The book is dedicated as follows: "To Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., and to the memory of Mary Belle Jordan, for standing against everything Andrew Johnson stood for." Clearly nothing in this book can be trusted. The author is biased and works to make the reader biased as well. Gordon-Reed should not be concidered a historian and should not be allowed to teach at Harvard or anywhere else. This book is a waste of time and money.

Worst book in this great series

This book is terribly subjective, by far the worst book in the "American Presidents Series." I wish I spent my time reading another book.
