The Amish Cook's Anniversary Book

In August 1991, Elizabeth Coblenz’s first “Amish Cook” column appeared in the newspaper, opening up her old order Amish family to the world. When she died, her daughter Lovina Eicher took over the best-loved column. The Amish Cook’s Anniversary Book celebrates food, family and faith with the best columns from the last 20 years, page after page of beautiful photographs, and at least a baker's dozen of Amish Cook Classic recipes throughout. Although this is not a cookbook, it's a treat for anyone who loves the smell of homemade cinnamon rolls baking in the oven, the fresh flavors of Dutch coleslaw and cucumber salad on a hot summer’s day, life’s simple pleasures, fond memories and family tradition. Color photos.

Good and bad.

They really should have a very different title for this book.It is definitely not a cook book; rather, it is more like a diary of Amish life. On the first few pages it mentions a really good recipe that I was interested in but did not include it in the book, of course. If you look on this with the perspective that this is about Amish life, then it's a pretty good book. If you are hoping for a book that has plenty of Amish recipes, then go elsewhere. Believe it when the description says it is not a cookbook.

Disappointed
April 13, 2011

Judging by the title, I assumed that there would be more recipes! So for 20 years, all they could come up with was 32 recipes...290 pages, and so few recipes? I know the description said it's "not a cookbook" but I guess I was hoping for a little more than what I got. Also, by looking at the cover, you would assume more than a few recipes would be included. I think I will be sending it back.

Lovingly Presented

I loved this book!! Read it from cover to cover in two days. Remember: the busiest years are the happiest years and their whole life is very busy so they are happy in their lives. Would love it if Lovina would put the book together that her mother had "in the works" and get it published. A poignant account, happy times and some sad. They certainly know how to pitch in help everyone in their family and others too. This book would make a great gift for anyone.

Could not put this book down. What a wonderful, simple, loving life this family leads. The journey from births of family to passings is so heartfelt. This book is truly inspirational.

different slant

I really enjoyed this book. A cook book that you enjoy reading cover to cover is a real find. The recipes are interesting and thinking about using what you have instead of running out to the market with a long list is thought provoking. Also enjoyed a peek into the lives of a group of people with a different but loving life style.
