Did you know that our first female Supreme Court Justice, Sandra Day O’Connor, grew up on a ranch in the middle of the desert? When she was a child, she, like most boys and girls her age, wanted a pet. But her search to find a pet was anything but typical, as she tells us in this wonderful picture book based on her childhood. She soon learns that tortoises, rabbits, coyotes, bobcats and other wild animals are better suited for…well, the wild. But when a little stray dog comes into Sandra’s life, her search for a pet to hold and talk to and take care of is over. With beautiful illustrations of the American Southwest and its inhabitants and a wealth of interesting animal facts, Finding Susie is a treat for animal lovers! (Ages 4-9)

I liked the illustrations & the lesson of the story that wild animals aren't pets....but was just a bit disappointed on the first page where Sandra "asks the sky if this will be the summer her parents allow her to have a pet" It was a little strange. Crossings is a Christian book club & I found it rather odd. When I read this to children, I stop and ask them who was she talking to and they answer "God"

I bought the book for my Granddaughter. Her mother and I were quick to emphasize that Ms. O'Connor was the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court. This book shows another facet of her life. It's charming
