From his conversion and through all his life, John Stott gloried in the cross of Christ and its atoning power, and preached the gospel of salvation by grace alone through faith. Like the apostle Paul, he longed to bring people to "the obedience of faith" at the foot of the cross. And there are thousands around the world who have been led to faith in Christ through the preaching and writings of John Stott.
But John was equally passionate about what might be called "the obedience of love"—that is, our obedience to the teachings of Jesus, which alone can prove the reality of our claim to love him. so much of his won preaching and writing was about the down-to-earth practice of radical Christian discipleship in the home, the workplace—everywhere in fact. "It's no use," he would say, "just singing pretty songs: 'Jesus I love you.' They don't prove anything. It's only in daily life that you prove, through obedience, whether or not you love Jesus."
John Stott, then, was a man who spent his life leading people to trust in the cross of Christ and urging those who had done so to obey the words of Christ. So to the extent that this Portrait speaks the truth about the man it portrays, let it also portray the transforming truth of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ in the life of one of his most dedicated followers. and for that life we give all the glory, thanks and praise to the Lord our God.

Portraits of a Radical Disciple, edited by Christopher Wright, provides wonderfully insightful portraits of John Stott, a giant in the church and a radical disciple of Jesus for over half a century.
With contributions from leaders such as Michael Green and others from around the world, we see John in a deeper, more personal way. The small acts of kindness he performed are revealed, such as regularly emptying wastebaskets and taking many hours to find the elderly mother of a priest in India.
As the range of John’s interests, from Woody Allen movies to chocolate, are brought to our attention, this man of God emerges as one who is in love with life and who actively follows Christ in the midst of his advancing years.
